What is a cookie?

A cookie is a harmless text file stored in your browser when you visit almost any web page. The purpose of the cookie is to allow the website to remember your visit when you return to browse that page again, and cookies have been used since the first browsers appeared for the World Wide Web.

What a cookie is NOT

It is not a virus, trojan, worm, spam, spyware, nor does it open pop-up windows.

What information does a cookie store?

Cookies usually do not store sensitive information about you, such as credit cards or bank details, photographs, national ID, or personal data. They store technical data, personal preferences, content customization, etc.

The web server does not associate you as a person, but rather with your web browser. In fact, if you usually browse with Internet Explorer and then try browsing the same website with Firefox or Chrome, the website will not recognize that you are the same person because it’s actually associating the browser, not the person.

What types of cookies exist?

  • Technical cookies: These are the most basic and allow the site to determine, among other things, when a human or automated application is browsing, when a user is anonymous or registered; basic tasks for the functioning of any dynamic website.
  • Analytical cookies: They collect information about your browsing — the most-used sections, products viewed, time slots of use, language, etc.
  • Advertising cookies: They display advertising based on your browsing, country of origin, language, etc.

What are first-party and third-party cookies?

First-party cookies are generated by the site you’re visiting, while third-party cookies are generated by external services or providers like Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.

What happens if I disable cookies?

To help you understand the impact of disabling cookies, here are some examples:

  • You won’t be able to share content from this site on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social network.
  • The website won’t be able to tailor content to your personal preferences, as is common in online stores.
  • You won’t be able to access personalized areas of the website such as My Account, My Profile, or My Orders.
  • Online stores: It will be impossible to make online purchases; they would need to be made by phone or in physical stores if available.
  • You will not be able to customize your geographic preferences like time zone, currency, or language.
  • The website won’t be able to perform web analytics on visitors and traffic, making it less competitive.
  • You won’t be able to write on the blog, upload photos, post comments, rate or review content. Likewise, the website won’t know if you are human or an automated application posting spam.
  • Sector-tailored advertising can’t be displayed, which reduces the website’s advertising revenue.
  • All social networks use cookies—if you disable them, you won’t be able to use any social network.

Can cookies be deleted?
